Individual compositions by Associate Professor of Music Mark Olivieri and Ivan Malcolm ’24 will be presented in this year’s Vision of Sound performances in Syracuse, Geneva and Rochester.
The Society for New Music will present the 18th edition of “Vision of Sound,” celebrating new music and dance throughout the Upstate New York region with performances on Friday, Feb. 16- Sunday, Feb. 18 at the Palace Theater, Hobart and William Smith and Nazareth University.
A collaboration with the Society for New Music, the Vision of Sound will showcase collaborations between Upstate New York composers and choreographers—including compositions created by Associate Professor of Music Mark Olivieri and Ivan Malcolm ’24 (pictured above on drums) from Hobart and William Smith (HWS) —whose visions will be brought to the stage by acclaimed musicians and movement artists.
In addition to Olivieri and Malcolm’s works, Heather Buchman will conduct the Society Players in music by Octavio Vazquez (Nazareth University faculty), Jaclyn Breeze (a recent Syracuse University grad), Nicolas Scherzinger (Syracuse University faculty), Samuel Evans (recent Syracuse University grad), Daniel Thomas Davis (SUNY Binghamton faculty) and Paul Leary (SUNY Oswego faculty).
Choreographers paired with each composer are, respectively, Heather Roffe (Nazareth University faculty), Aaron Loux (instructor, Adelphi University), Maya June Dwyer (Montreal- and NY-based interdisciplinary artist), Rosita Adamo (formerly of Ailey II and Philadelphia Dance Co.), Kaley Pruitt (SUNY Brockport faculty), Brian Lawson (Skidmore faculty), Angela Lopez (interdisciplinary movement artist based in WNY) and Aldo Kattón (Artistic Leader of the Central New York Ballet).
The Society Players are Heather Buchman, conductor; Lana Stafford, flutes; Marcy Bacon, clarinets; Margaret Leenhouts, violin; Zachary Sweet, cello; and Sar-Shalom Strong, piano. The Society for New Music’s Managing Director Carole Brzozowski is producer for the event with Alaina Olivieri serving as dance coordinator, and lighting design by Victoria King.
