Preparing for Your Advising Appointment
To help guide you through your first year at Hobart and William Smith, you will be assigned a faculty advisor. Your advisor will help you with all aspects of college life, from navigating courses to supporting you with resources. Building a connection with them early on can help make your first year more manageable.
Before the Meeting
Before you meet with your advisor, consider these ideas:
- Complete a math assessment, even if you're not considering a math course.
- Navigate this page to figure out foreign language placement for languages you studied in high school.
- If you need, or think you'll need, academic support, consider discussing the Center for Teaching and Learning with your advisor.
- Come up with a list of questions you have and bring them to the meeting.
- Write down some goals you have for your first semester.
- Finally, and most important, make a list of courses which interest you.
