ORIENTATION SCHEDULE

Orientation 2025 will take place from Wednesday, August 27 through Sunday, August 31. Parents and families will join us on Wednesday, August 27 to help their student move in to campus.

This list provides highlights of each day's events.

Wednesday, August 27

Arrive on Campus

Report to The Quad

To facilitate a smooth check-in and shorter lines under the Matriculation Tent, Hobart and William Smith strongly recommends that all families arrive during the following staggered check-in hours:

  • 9 – 10 a.m. - Third and Fourth Floor Residents, International Students
  • 10 – 11 a.m. - Second Floor Residents
  • 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. - Ground-Level and First Floor Residents

9 a.m. – 12 p.m. - Check In and Matriculation

Check in with our friendly Orientation staff! Shake hands with President Mark D. Gearan on the Coxe Hall steps, the same steps you will walk across when you graduate. Meet your HWS Deans and campus partners.

9 a.m. – 3 p.m. - Move In

Pick up your residence hall room key and your OneCard. Meet your roommate and move into your new home! The Welcome Team (faculty, staff, community members, athletic teams, and others!) will help you move your personal belongings to your room.

11 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. - Complimentary On-Campus Lunch

Enjoy a “grab and go” bagged lunch at the Scandling Campus Center Café, Rees Lounge, Hirshson Ballroom, Durfee Lounge, or Sherrill Lounge. Prefer to dine in? Join us for a sit-down lunch in Saga Dining Hall.   

Off-Campus Lunch: If time permits, families are welcome to travel off-campus to enjoy lunch at one of our beautiful downtown Geneva restaurants.

3:15 - 4:45 p.m. - Students: Meet Your Orientation Mentors

Learn about the deans’ work with students as they arrive and Grow through their experiences at HWS over four ears. You are welcome to attend either session; however, your student’s specific dean can be found on your family folder. Deans Kelly Payne and Kelvin Clark will facilitate this session.

2. Supporting Your First-Year
Vandervort Room, 2nd Floor, Scandling Campus Center
Learn about the deans’ work with students as they arrive and Grow through their experiences at HWS over four years. You are welcome to attend either session; however, your student’s specific dean can be found on your family folder. Deans Amy Green and David Mapstone will facilitate this session.

4 - 4:45 p.m. - Parents and Families: Refreshment Break

Gearan Center for the Performing Arts

Recharge with light refreshments while meeting fellow parents and families.

4 - 4:30 p.m. - Parents and Families: Understanding the Title IX, Harassment and Discrimination Policy

Common Room, Scandling Campus Center

Please join the Office of Equal Opportunity and Title IX for a session about the Title IX, Harassment and Discrimination Policy including information about prevention and education. Participants will learn more about rights and responsibilities, resources, and how best to support students’ understanding of affirmative consent and healthy relationships.

5 p.m. - President's Welcome Ceremony

8:15 - 9 p.m. - Illumination: Class of 2029 Photo

Bristol Lawn

Get excited for your first official photo as the Class of 2029! This traditional photo will be featured on HWS’ “This Week in Photos” website!

9 - 9:45 p.m. - Community Circles

Get to know your new floor-mates and Community Assistant (CA) during a meeting in your residence hall.

Friday, August 29

9 - 11 a.m. - First-Year Seminar Class

FSEM Classroom

Start your semester off with the first week of class in your FSEM. This is a required class meeting and you should come to class with whatever tools you use to engage in learning.

11 a.m. - 12 p.m. - First-Year Advising Check-In

Faculty Offices

If you have questions about your schedule and are interested in changing a course, please use this time to meet with your advisor to discuss your options.  Your advisor will lift the hold during that meeting so you can add/drop courses.

11 a.m. - 12 p.m. - STEM, Math, and Language Tracks

Scandling Campus Center

If you gave concerns about whether you are in the right level courses for science, math or language courses, meet with department representatives to discuss. You will be able to make changes to your schedule during this time if necessary.

12 - 1 p.m. - Lunch

Enjoy a delicious lunch with your peers.

1 - 4 p.m. - Day of Service

Explore your new community while making it a better place to live and learn. You may be cleaning or working outdoors, so appropriate attire and footwear is suggested.

9 - 10 a.m. - Meet Your First-Year Mentor (Required)

FSEM Classroom

Get to know your First-Year Mentor and learn useful tips for the transition to college. This session is required.

10 a.m. - 12 p.m. - LOVE Geneva Tour

Depart: Front of Scandling

Take a leisurely walk down South Main Street to explore the downtown Geneva area, meet local business owners, and city leaders to learn more about your new home. Check below for your group's designated time:

  • OM Groups 1-15: 10 – 11:30 a.m.
  • OM Groups 16-29/Transfer Group: 10:30 a.m. – 12 p.m

12 – 1 p.m. - LOVE Geneva Food Fair

The Quad (Rain Location: Scandling Campus Center)

Enjoy lunch with food from various restaurants and shops from the Geneva area! Sample their offerings, find out where they’re located, and pick your favorites.

1 - 3 p.m. - Campus-Wide Open House:

  • Visit the College Store: Textbook Pick-Up | College Store
    The College Store will be open until 5 p.m. to pick up your textbooks and buy any last-minute school supplies or HWS branded items.
  • Paws for a Break! | Stern Lawn (Rain Location: Stern Hall)
    While at HWS you are bound to fall in love with one of the many friendly pooches on campus! Come meet these lovable animals on Stern Lawn.
  • Climb St. Mark’s Tower | Demarest Hall
    Go where few have gone before…don’t miss your chance to take some selfies with an amazing view!
  • Library Expo | Library
    Visit the library to meet staff and learn about how the Library, Center for Teaching and Learning, Disability Services, IT Help Desk, and Digital Learning Center can help you be successful at HWS! Pick up some swag, make some crafts, play some games, and search for some “Quacks” in the Stacks!
  • LGBTQ+ Resource Center Open House | 402 Pulteney Street
    Join HWS faculty, staff, and students to learn about LGBTQ+ life at HWS.
  • Disability Services Drop-In | CTL, Library
    Meet with the staff and learn about resources to support your in and out class experience on campus.
  • Career Services Drop-In | Trinity Hall
    Learn about resources and opportunities for your professional pursuits.
  • First Generation Initiative (FGI) Meet and Greet | Adams Intercultural Center
    A chance for First Generation College students to meet each other, upperclass students, and faculty and staff. Stop by and pick up your free FGI swag and meet the community!

Gather with the greater HWS community as we commence a new academic year. Convocation is an opportunity to come together and celebrate our rich history and traditions as you begin your intellectual journey at HWS.
