21 March 2025 • Athletics Success for HWS Alpine Skiing at USCSA Nationals
Statesmen and Herons capture standout performances to wrap up third varsity season.
The Hobart and William Smith Alpine skiing teams finished their seasons with a successful week at the 2025 USCSA National Championships at Mount Bachelor in Bend, Ore. They beat competitors from Cornell University, Syracuse University, Michigan State University, Lehigh University, Pennsylvania State University, the University of Connecticut and the University of Washington, among others.
The Hobart Alpine skiing team capped off its most successful season in program history, finishing fifth out of 27 teams after competing in three events over the week of March 10-14.
First-year Will Patton and sophomore Ethan Hine highlighted Hobart's accomplishments on the mountain as the two combined for five All-America awards. Patton was named an All-American in the skier cross, giant slalom and slalom after finishing top 15 in each event, while Hine earned All-America honors in the Giant Slalom and Slalom races. Overall, Patton finished the week ranked fourth out of 143 racers, while Hine finished 11th.
On Tuesday, March 11, Hobart competed in the skier cross for the first time this season, finishing third out of 23 teams, to land on the podium at nationals for the first time in program history. The next day, the Statesmen finished sixth out of 27 teams in the giant slalom. On Thursday, March 13, Hobart closed out the week's action with a fifth-place finish in the slalom to clinch fifth place overall.
Patton had a standout week on the slopes, racing to All-American status in all three events to close out his rookie campaign. In skier cross, Patton finished fifth out of 89 racers to help the Statesmen clinch third place. Hobart finished behind Wisconsin and Army West Point to round out the top three teams. Junior Rex Eidlin and first-year Jake Labanowski also impressed in the skier cross, finishing 15th and 25th, respectively.
In the giant slalom, Hobart produced two All-American's as Patton and Hine raced to top 10 finishes to clinch sixth place out of 27 teams. The top 15 skiers of the event earned All-American recognition. Patton continued his dominance with a sixth place finish out of 143 racers with a combined time of 2:05.86. He was followed closely by Hine who was ninth with a combined time of 2:07.36.
In Thursday's slalom, Patton and Hine led Hobart to a fifth place finish out of 27 teams as both raced to All-American status yet again. Patton posted a fourth place finish out of 142 racers, stopping the clock at 1:24.42. Hine's time of 1:26.99 secured 13th place, clinching the fifth All-American honor of his collegiate career, closing out Hobart's most successful trip to the national championships.

Meanwhile, the William Smith Alpine skiing team concluded its season at the Championships by finishing tied for 14th out of 27 teams, highlighted by a 34th place overall finish by senior Marjorie Plants out of 142 racers.
On Tuesday, March 11, William Smith competed in the giant slalom, finishing 16th out of 27 teams. The following day, the Herons placed sixth out of 18 teams in the skier cross, competing in the event for the first time. William Smith concluded the week with a 12th place finish in the slalom on Thursday, March 13, to secure a tie for 14th place overall with Oregon.
In Tuesday's 136-racer field in the slalom, the Herons combined for a time of 7:25.53. Plants led William Smith with a 43rd place finish after stopping the clock at 2:19.99. Sophomore Emily Cain clocked in at 2:29.27 to secure 63rd in her first collegiate national championship appearance.
In Wednesday's skier cross, first-year Lily Winch had a standout performance for William Smith, securing 13th place with a time of 28.92. Classmate Madison Campisi also impressed for the Herons, finishing 20th with a time of 30.38. Plants rounded out the top three finishers for William Smith with a 25th place finish after stopping the clock at 29.31.
In Thursday's slalom, William Smith produced two top 50 finishers in a 137-racer field. Junior Katherine Broderick led the Herons with a 36th place finish after combining for a time of 1:43.75. Plants followed close behind with a time of 1:45.43 to secure 42nd place. Senior Emma McKenna and first-year Mia Crivelli added 62nd and 69th place finishes for William Smith.
