About the Program
Among the more traditional languages (Spanish, French, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, German, Russian) taught on campus, HWS offers, under the Less Commonly Taught Languages program, four more languages students can learn while at HWS: Arabic, Brazilian-Portuguese, Hindi and Vietnamese.
Arabic. HWS offers up to four semesters of Arabic language (101, 102, 201 and 202) in the following cycle: 101 and 201 in the Fall and 102 and 202 in the Spring. Each year HWS hires a Fulbright scholar to teach these classes. Students meet three times a week for lectures and once a week for the Arabic table.
Brazilian-Portuguese. HWS offers up to two semesters (101 and 102) of Portuguese with specific emphasis on Brazilian-Portuguese. The classes are taught remotely by Prof. Ana Dugan of Skidmore College. Classes meet remotely once a week for two hours.
Hindi. HWS offers up to four semesters of Hindi (101, 102, 201 and 202) in the following cycle: 101 and 201 in the Fall and 102 and 202 in the Spring. The classes are taught by Syracuse University faculty through a NY6 initiative. Classes meet remotely four times a week for one hour.
Vietnamese. HWS offers up to four semesters of Vietnamese (101, 102, 201 and 202) in the following cycle: 101 and 201 in the Fall and 102 and 202 in the Spring. However, 101 is only offered in Vietnam to students studying abroad. The other classes (102, 201 and 202) are taught remotely by staff of the Vietnamese Language School (Hanoi and Saigon, Vietnam). Classes meet remotely twice a week for 90 minutes.
All courses may be taken for credit or pass/fail. Attendance is mandatory.
