Minors on Campus

Hobart and William Smith Colleges is committed to a student-centered environment, is globally focused and grounded in the values of equity and service, and develops citizens who will lead in the 21st century.  Education takes place not only in the classroom, but also outside the classroom through campus programs and service projects. The Colleges view civic responsibility, community engagement, and international education as integral components of a liberal arts education. In carrying out this charge the Hobart and William Smith community serves and partners with a broad array of internal and external constituents of all ages from a variety of communities, near and far, in an intentionally open environment.

Inherent to fulfilling this mission is a human obligation to provide safety for persons of all ages who participate in the Colleges’ programs. All members of the Colleges’ community are stewards of these relationships and must recognize differences of power that often exist. As members of this community, we all have a shared responsibility to protect those who are in a position of vulnerability. This is fulfilled when all individuals share in accountability for this obligation.

In light of these principles, the Colleges has implemented a Minors On Campus policy and associated safe guards for youth programs or events.  This Policy applies to any program, activity or service involving Minors that occurs on the Colleges’ property and to any HWS sponsored program, activity or service involving Minors, wherever it occurs. This Policy does not apply to general public events in the Colleges’ facilities where parents or guardians are required to attend and appropriately supervise their child. Any Minor visiting the Colleges and not directly participating in a program, activity or service must be supervised by a parent or guardian at all times. Unsupervised minors who are not participating in a program, activity or service may be asked to leave the Colleges’ property by Campus Safety.
