On-Campus Housing Selection

At Hobart and William Smith, we believe that being part of a residential college is living on campus with other students and exploring new experiences together. As part of our commitment to providing a well-rounded liberal arts experience, all students—first-year, sophomore, junior, and senior—are required to live on campus. This residential experience fosters a strong sense of community, encourages meaningful connections, and enriches academic and personal growth. We believe that living on campus is an integral part of the holistic education we offer at HWS.

First-Year Students: We house first-year students based on their selected First-Year Seminar course. Additionally, we strive to house first-year students with others of similar interests – helping their transition to college be as fruitful and comfortable as possible.

Upperclass Students: We believe that our students deserve to have a say in their housing. Every year, we provide a housing selection process for all returning students. Through an application process, students sign up to select a room from available spaces throughout our multitude of housing options. Additional information regarding each of the selection processes can be found below.

Housing Options: We recognize the importance of providing housing options that meet the needs of our diverse student population. Our residential facilities provide a variety of options including, single-gender and co-educational housing. We also provide a Gender Inclusive Housing process which allows students to live with other students of other gender(s) in any co-ed residential location.
